Project overview

Opportunity

As a councillor for the North-West Ward of Moreland, Dale Martin has amassed years of knowledge in taking on climate change at a local government level. To turn that experience into a tangible source of knowledge, the Local Government Climate Emergency Toolkit (LGCET) was developed.

The toolkit's goal is to outline steps for any stakeholders—from community members to government councillors—to make immediate action in their local council. A diverse audience meant the toolkit needed to cater to varying levels of experience in local government language and protocols.

Outcome

The final design presented the information-rich document in a format that is clear and approachable, breaking down actions into categories and benchmarking levels of achievement for specific and measurable targets.

The treatment of the document acknowledges the mix-and-match approach of the toolkit in its use of primitive building block shapes to frame key imagery. It was important to document to appear approachable and avoid alarming or sensational visuals, instead celebrating ecological diversity and empowerment that can come from making change at a community level.

Key responsibilties

  • Leading of the design, typesetting and production of the document.
  • Collaboration with the editor to make the information easy to access and understand for a broad audience.
