Written and directed by Melbourne filmmaker Catherine Bonny, Marked follows the story of 21-year-old Andrea, whose life unravels after a contraceptive implant sends her mind into disarray.
The scope of work included developing a brand identity, opening and closing credit frames, and a promotional poster. The outcome ties in seamlessly with the film's subject matter of body horror and surreal, psychologically-charged sequences.
Custom typography—a distorted Tusker Grotesk—uses bold, blocky type protruded by sharp negative space. In place of a counter, the 'D' features a subtle debossing which, depending on the application, subtly moves or distorts to carry through the themes of the implant having a mind of its own.
The two romantic interests James and Rob are each styled with red and blue respectively from costuming through to set design, and Lauren's psychological decline is denoted by subtle changes between red and blue clothing. For this reason, the colour palette of reds and blues were a natural choice. Hot red cuts through the dark navy to create a jarring visual tension.
This identity was then carried through to the credit sequence animated by Aleksander Janev, which takes typographic cues from modern and historic medical charts, diagrams, and interfaces. These themes tie into the final promotional poster, which appropriates public domain medical illustrations to produce the female form.
Key props were also developed for the GP and doctor's office scenes, styled by Valentina Serebrennikova.
